Newcastle take “first steps” towards Phillips transfer

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Newcastle have taken the first steps towards signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined the Premier League champions from Leeds United in 2022, paying a reported fee of £45 million to secure his services as manager Pep Guardiola sought to bolster his ranks in the middle of the park. However, Phillips has failed to establish himself as an important player at the Etihad, with Guardiola recently admitting it was he who failed to get the best out of the player.

It is believed Phillips is now keen to leave the club in search of more game-time, and City are apparently open to allowing him to go for a suitable fee.

As for Newcastle, they re still searching for someone to step into th…

Sean Dyche ‘delighted’ as winning return to Burnley continues Everton’s climb

Sean Dyche enjoyed a standing ovation on his return to Burnley before his in-form Everton side silenced Turf Moor with a 2-0 win which increases the Clarets’ relegation worries at the foot of the Premier League table.

Dyche was back at the ground where he spent the best part of 10 years in charge, twice earning promotion and keeping Burnley in the top flight against the odds before being sacked in April 2022 towards the end of their last, ultimately unsuccessful, battle against the drop.

His Everton side are not that far from the current relegation fight but only as a result of a 10-point penalty for breaching financial rules, and first-half goals from Amadou Onana and Michael Keane made it four straight wins. They may sit 16th, but would be ninth without the penalty.<…

Torino 0-1 Juventus: De Ligt seals derby delight for Serie A champions

Matthijs de Ligt scored his first Juventus goal as the Serie A champions earned a 1-0 win at rivals Torino in the Derby della Mole.

The start of De Ligt s Juve career has not been easy but the Netherlands centre-back had a moment to remember in the 70th minute of a bad-tempered clash on Saturday.

Juve had been unable to break the deadlock but when Gonzalo Higuain knocked a corner into his path, De Ligt showed a striker s instinct to break Salvatore Sirigu s resistance.

Victory moved Juve back to the top of the Serie A table above Inter, with the Bianconeri now having won on 10 of their past 11 league visits to Torino.

With Walter Mazzarri seeking his first win over Juventus since 2011, handball appeals were rejected in both penalty areas during a stodgy …

Paris Saint-Germain have closed an investigation into player recruitment practices after finding no discrimination, the Ligue 1 club announced.

“I have belief in my ability and what I have done in my career as every player should,” Maguire said.

“Listen, it’s been tough. I want to play games. I want to feel important to the club and I want to feel important to the rest of the team.

“At the moment I haven’t been playing anywhere near as much as I’d like. It’s the bottom line of it.
